শহরের মাহিগঞ্জ তাজহাট এলাকায় রংপুরের প্রজা হিতৈষী জমিদার গোবিন্দ লাল রায়ের পুত্র গোপাল লাল রায়ের বাড়িটি প্রাচীন স্থাপত্য শিল্পের এক অপূর্ব নিদর্শন। ছায়া ঘেরা মনোরম পরিবেশে অবস্থিত এই বাড়িটি নির্মাণ করা হয় ১৯০৮ থেকে ১৯১৭ সালের মধ্যে। ১৯৪৭ সালে জমিদার বাড়িটি পরিত্যক্ত ঘোষণা করা হয়। তখন ৫৫ একর জমিসহ মূল ভবনটিতে কৃষি প্রশিক্ষণ ইন্সটিটিউট প্রতিষ্ঠা করা হয়। পরে ১৯৮৪ সালে ওই জমিদার বাড়িতে স্থাপন করা হয় বাংলাদেশ সুপ্রীম কোর্টের হাইকোর্ট ডিভিশনের রংপুর বেঞ্চ। ১৯৯২ সালে হাইকোর্ট বেঞ্চ প্রত্যাহার করার পর ১৯৯৫ সালে জমিদার বাড়িটি প্রতœতত্ত্ব বিভাগের কাছে ন্যস্ত করা হয়। ২০০৫ সালের ২০ মার্চ রংপুর জাদুঘর স্থানান্তর করা হয় তাজহাট জমিদার বাড়িতে। সে সময় রংপুর জাদুঘর এলাকায় আধুনিক পর্যটন নগরী হিসেবে গড়ে তোলার ঘোষণা দেয়া হলেও আজও সেই ঘোষণা বাস্তবায়িত হয়নি। রংপুর জাদুঘরে দুর্লভ প্রতœসামগ্রীর মধ্যে রয়েছে মূল্যবান কষ্টি পাথরের শিলামূর্তি, পোড়ামাটির ফলক, শিবলিঙ্গ, ছোট কুরআন শরিফ, প্রাচীন মুদ্রা ইত্যাদি। দর্শনার্থীদের বসানোর জন্য জাদুঘর চত্বর জুড়ে নির্মাণ করা হয়েছে আসন। খোলা হয়েছে মন্তব্য বই। জাদুঘর কর্তৃপক্ষ জানান, দর্শনার্থীদের জন্য প্রবেশ ফি ১০ টাকা এবং বিদেশী পর্যটকদের কাছ থেকে নেয়া হচ্ছে ৫০ টাকা। কর্তৃপক্ষ জানান, ২০০৫ সালে এ জাদুঘরে দেশী-বিদেশী দর্শনার্থী এসেছিল ৫০ হাজার। গত বছর দর্শনার্থীর সংখ্যা বৃদ্ধি পেয়ে দাঁড়ায় ১ লাখ ২০ হাজারে। চলতি বছরের গত ৮ মাসে দর্শণার্থীর সংখ্যা দেড় লাখ ছাড়িয়ে গেছে। জাদুঘরের কাস্টোডিয়ান আব্দুল লতিফ প্রামাণিক জানান, শুধু দেশী দর্শনার্থীদের পাশাপাশি ভারত, শ্রীলঙ্কা, যুক্তরাজ্য, যুক্তরাষ্ট্র ও নেপালসহ বিভিন্ন দেশের রাষ্ট্রদূত এবং পর্যটকরাও জাদুঘর পরিদর্শনে আসেন। তারা জাদুঘর ও জমিদার বাড়ির পরিবেশ দেখে মুগ্ধ হওয়ার কথাও অকপটে স্বীকার করেছেন বলে কর্তৃপক্ষ জানান।
