ইতিহাসের সবচেয়ে জঘন্য এক স্থান এই দ্বীপ। ১৮৫৪ সালে নেপোলিয়ন-৩ এখানে বন্দিশালা প্রতিষ্ঠা করেন। মোট চারটি বন্দীশালা ছিল এ দ্বীপে। এখানে প্রায় ৮০ হাজার ফরাসি নাগরিককে অন্তরীণ রাখা হয়। এই দ্বীপকে শুকনো গিলোটিন বলা হতো। ১৯৩৮ সালে বন্দিশালাগুলো বন্ধ করে দেওয়া হয়। প্রায় ৫০ হাজার বন্দীকে খুন করা হয় বন্দিশালাগুলোতে। এই দ্বীপে বন্দী ছিলেন হেনরি শ্যারিয়ার। ১৯৬৮ সালে লেখা তাঁর প্যাপিলন বইটি প্রকাশের পরপরই বিক্রির তালিকায় শীর্ষে স্থান করে নেয়। পরে এই বই থেকে সিনেমাও তৈরি হয়।
