বঙ্গোপসাগরের উপকণ্ঠে মধুমতি-বলেশ্বর নদী বিধৌত পলিগঠিত সুপারি, নারিকেল, খেজুর, কুল, পেয়ারাবাগানের ছড়াছড়ি এমন নৈসর্গিক সৌন্দর্যে ভরপুর জেলাটি হলো পিরোজপুর।
আয়তন ও অবস্থান
আয়তনের ভিত্তিতে পিরোজপুর জেলা বাংলাদেশের ৫০তম বৃহত্তম জেলা। এই জেলার মোট আয়তন ১,৩০৭.৬১ বর্গকিলোমিটার, যা সমগ্র বাংলাদেশের মোট আয়তনের ০.৮৮%। পিরোজপুর জেলা ২২০০র্৯ উত্তর অক্ষাংশ থেকে ২২০৫র্২ উত্তর অক্ষাংশ এবং ৮৯০৫র্২ পূর্ব দ্রাঘিমা থেকে ৯০০১র্৩ পূর্ব দ্রাঘিমাংশের মধ্যে অবস্থিত। জেলাটির উত্তরে বরিশাল ও গোপালগঞ্জ জেলা, দক্ষিণে বরগুনা ও পটুয়াখালী জেলা, পূর্বে ঝালকাঠি জেলা এবং পশ্চিমে বাগেরহাট জেলা ও ধলেশ্বর নদী।
নামকরণের ইতিহাস
কথিত আছে, শাহ সুজার পুত্র ফিরোজ শাহ্ এ এলাকায় মৃতু্যবরণ করলে তাকে এখানকার পুরোনো মসজিদ সংলগ্ন স্থানে সমাধিস্থ করা হয়। এই ঐতিহাসিক ব্যক্তির নামানুসারে তখনকার এই ছোট্ট গ্রাম 'ফিরোজপুর' নামে পরিচিতি লাভ করে। এর সীমানা পূর্বে মাছিমপুর, পশ্চিমে মহিশপুর, উত্তরে শিকারপুর এবং দক্ষিণে নামাজপুর। এই চার পুরের সমন্বয়ে এর নামকরণ করা হয় ফিরোজপুর। পরবর্তীতে এ অঞ্চলের মানুষের উচ্চারণের বিভ্রাটে এ অঞ্চলটি ফিরোজপুর থেকে পিরোজপুর নামে পরিচিতি লাভ করে।
প্রশাসনিক পটভূমি
১৭৯০ সালে পিরোজপুর নামে পরিচিত গ্রাম থানায় রূপান্তরিত হয়। বাকেরগঞ্জের দক্ষিণ-পশ্চিম অঞ্চলে আবাদ বৃদ্ধি, নৌডাকাতি রোধ এবং বিদ্রোহী কৃষকদের দমন করার জন্য একটি মহকুমা প্রতিষ্ঠার প্রয়োজন দেখা দেয়। ১৮৫৬ সালের ২৪ এপ্রিল ইংরেজ সরকার পিরোজপুর মহকুমা গঠনের প্রস্তাব দেয়। কিন্তু সিপাহি বিপস্নবের কারণে পিরোজপুর মহকুমার ঘোষণা বিলম্বিত হয়। ১৮৫৯ সালের ২৮ অক্টোবর ব্রিটিশ সরকার পিরোজপুর মহকুমা গঠন করে। তখন এই মহকুমার তিনটি পুলিশ সার্কেল ছিল, যথা কেয়ারী, পিরোজপুর ও মঠবাড়িয়া। ১৯৮৪ সালের এক সরকারি প্রজ্ঞাপন অনুসারে ইন্দুরকানী থানাকে পিরোজপুর সদর থানার সাথে একত্রিত করা হয়। ১৯৮৪ সালের ১ মার্চ পিরোজপুর পূর্ণাঙ্গ জেলার মর্যাদা লাভ করে। পিরোজপুর জেলায় ৭টি উপজেলা, ৫১টি ইউনিয়ন, ৬০৯টি গ্রাম রয়েছে। উপজেলাগুলো হচ্ছে_পিরোজপুর সদর, ভান্ডারিয়া, মঠবাড়িয়া, নজিরপুর, নেছারাবাদ, কাউখালি ও জিয়ানগর।
জনসংখ্যা
জেলার মোট জনসংখ্যা ১,২৬,৫২৫ জন (২০০১ সালের হিসাব মতে), যা বাংলাদেশের মোট জনসংখ্যার ০.৯১%, ঘনত্ব প্রতি বর্গকিলোমিটারে ৮৬১ জন (প্রায়)। জনসংখ্যা ৫০.০২% পুরুষ, ৪৯.৯৮% মহিলা ধর্মের ভিত্তিতে ৭৯.০১% মুসলিম, ২০.৯১%, হিন্দু, ০.৮৮% অন্যান্য ধর্মাবলম্বী।
নদ-নদী :প্রধান নদ-নদীগুলো হচ্ছে_মধুমতি, বালেশ্বরী, কচাখালী, সন্ধ্যা।
জলবায়ু :বার্ষিক গড় সর্বোচ্চ তাপমাত্রা ৩৫.৫ ডিগ্রি সেলসিয়াস এবং সর্বনিম্ন ১২.৫ ডিগ্রি সেলসিয়াস। বার্ষিক বৃষ্টিপাত ১,৭১০ মিমি।
দর্শনীয় স্থানসমূহ :উলেস্নখযোগ্য দর্শনীয় স্থানগুলোর মধ্যে রয়েছে ছারছীনার দরবার শরীফ, রায় বাহাদুর চৌধুরীর ধ্বংসপ্রাপ্ত প্রাসাদ, জমিদারি নিদর্শন, ভেলাই চোগদারের দীঘি, রায়ের কাঠি জমিদার বাড়ি ও শিবমন্দির, কৌড়িখাড়া রাজবাড়ির ধ্বংসাবশেষ, কুমারখালী কালীমন্দির ইত্যাদি।
যোগাযোগ ব্যবস্থা :ঢাকা থেকে সড়ক পথে ঈগল, সাকুরা প্রভৃতি পরিবহনের বাসে সরাসরি পিরোজপুরে যাওয়া যায়। এ ছাড়া নদীপথে সদর ঘাট থেকে রাজদূত, তরিকা, রমদূত, অগ্রদূত প্রভৃতি লঞ্চে করে পিরোজপুর যাওয়া যায়।
